Doug Maragas, winemaker, and Grant Scholz, assistant vineyard manager pitch in 3 tons of grapes into our press marking the first press of our 2017 vintage. This initial press is a field blend of white grapes sourced from Sam's block and destined for our medal winning estate produced wine - "Blanco." By hand, we sort and pitch every fork full of clusters into our vintage German Wilmes press. Not only is this best for the wine, it's an incredible fitness program for all of us. By the end of harvest we will have moved by hand over 45 tons of grapes.
This video clip captures our Wilmes press working the 2017 "Blanco" grapes. The grapes are being pressed against a steel screen and the juice is flowing down through that screen and onto another screen. From there the juice flows into a trough where it collected and pumped into a holding tank where a portion of the sediment will settle out prior to transferring to barrels to ferment.
