Explore Maragas Winery
Our winery is located in a beautiful area of Central Oregon at 15523 SW Hwy 97, Culver, Oregon. Couched between the beautiful rock formations of Smith Rock and seven peaks of the majestic Cascade Mountains, our visitors relax on our patio and lawn and soak up our views. Established in 1999, Maragas Winery is the founding winery and vineyard of Central Oregon.
The microclimate at our Vineyard is suitable for several different European varietals and French American hybrids. Our estate vineyard has seven blocks. Sam's block named after the daughter of the founder's Doug and Gina Maragas was the first block planted. |
We tested over 40 varietals in Sam's block to determine what vines to grow and how to grow them in our unique terroir. As a result, there are 24 different types of vines currently growing in Sam's block.
The six remaining blocks of our estate vineyard are planted in zinfandel, cabernet franc, pinot noir, pinot munier, chardonnay, muscat, frontenac, and marechal foch, and vignole. The Volcanic soils rich with minerals allow for excellent water drainage allowing the vines to thrive. We keep the soil in a balanced and healthy state by farming organically and sustainably. We control predators with farm dogs and we are developing a method of controlling insects with chickens (both of which are why we don't allow visitors pets to be outside of their vehicles at the winery). |
O U R M I S S I O N
Our mission is to make old world hand crafted barrel aged wine that is unique to our style and exemplifying complex flavor. Much of our wine making techniques were handed down generation to generation in the Maragas family. Anna Maragas, the mentor of Doug Maragas - founder of this winery - coached Doug on old world winemaking techinques starting when Doug was a child. Anna founded the first Maragas wine and grape brokering business in 1941. And, Anna learned her techniques and understanding of the wine and viticultural industry via her parents and so on, in Crete, Greece, where the family vineyard still exists.

Along with our old world techniques, we're very conscience of preserving the new world. We focus on farming organically and being as environmentally friendly as possible. You may notice that we don't use capsules over the necks of our bottles. We do this because capsules have no preservation uses for wine and are not recyclable. Next, what you may not know is that the "corks" we use are the first zero carbon footprint "cork" and are actually made out of sugar cane. Finally, we have a solar array that powers a substantial part of our operation here at Maragas Winery. In all, we strive to play our part in keeping our winemaking environment sustainable for generations to come.
